There’s something inexplicably très chic about a Saturday afternoon spent surrounded by beautiful people, with plenty of laughter, good vibes and not forgetting the much-needed gin. This is what constitutes an unforgettable weekend in the city and for sure, Saturday, 31st July 2021 was one for the books.
The ever so fabulous, beautiful, glamorous, stylish and gorgeous Mrs Catherine Njeri Kariuki, the creator of Fashionable Stepmum, hosted a one-of-a-kind brunch to acknowledge, celebrate and honor StepMothers and the wonderful contributions that they make in their families. Dubbed StepMum Brunch and held at Zen Garden, the ultimate venue, capturing the scenic surroundings of Nairobi’s Spring Valley, it was an afternoon filled with joy and love, and goodness as blended families gathered around to honor, share and celebrate their personal stories and journeys. It was also a day to learn a thing or two about the dynamics of blended families.
Step-parenting isn’t always easy, but it can also be exceptionally rewarding and wonderful. We grew up in a society which for the longest time had this perception of the evil step mother. But today, that is changing and society is more accepting of this type of family structure, even going ahead to coin a new term, blended families. A blended family is where one or both partners have at least one child from a previous relationship and are living together as a family.
Guest speakers included Dr Kristina Sule (Consultant Obstetrician and Gynecologist), Susan Wanjiku (economist and a finance and investment professional) and Popular thespian and comedian Carolyne Wanjiku, commonly known as Teacher Wanjiku who gave informative talks on various topics including infertility, financial planning and how to cope in a blended family.
The Fabolous Catherine or Fashionable Step Mum as she is popularly known, is not only a mother, wife and a step mum, but also a licensed image consultant and one of the most stylish and best dressed women in East Africa. Over the years, she has been a leading champion and advocate for blended families. “I wanted to share my journey as a stepmom. At the time I had been a stepmom for about 9 years. All that time I did not have any reference point of how to do it right. There were no books or anyone to talk to about what it really means to be a stepmom and for the longest time I couldn’t find a support system,” Catherine in an interview with True Love magazine in 2020.
“A home isn’t always the house we live in. It’s also the people we choose to surround ourselves with.”
